Violist Mark Holloway is a sought-after chamber musician, both within the United States and abroad. A native of Oceanside, New York, Mr. Holloway began his musical studies on the viola at the age of eight. He received his diploma from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with Michael Tree, and a B.M. Summa cum laude from Boston University. Mr. Holloway's festival appearances include the Marlboro Festival, Ravinia, Music from Angel Fire, Sarasota, Banff, Taos, and Mainly Mozart festivals, as well as the International Musicians' Seminar in Prussia Cove, England, Musique de Chambre a Giverny in France, and Musikdorf Ernen in Switzerland. He has also appeared with the Caramoor Virtuosi, the Boston Chamber Music Society, and the Jupiter Chamber Players. With the Brandenburg Ensemble he played at the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico, and other performances have taken him across the globe from Greenland to Russia. He frequently plays as a substitute with the New York Philharmonic, Orpheus, and the American Symphony, where he has appeared as principal violist. Mr. Holloway was principal violist at the Tanglewood Music Center and twice principal of the New York String Orchestra. He has also played at Bargemusic, at the 92nd Street Y, on WQXR's Young Artists' Showcase, live on Boston’s WGBH, on National Public Radio’s "Performance Today", with the Boston Symphony, and as soloist and guest principal with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. Hailed as an "outstanding violist" by the American Record Guide, Mr. Holloway has been fortunate to work with some of the leading composers of our time, including Elliott Carter, Sofia Gubaidulina, Paul Moravec, Joan Tower, and George Tsontakis. Mr. Holloway is a member of the prestigious Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Two.
