Peter Winograd
Peter Winograd
Peter Winograd continues to establish himself as one of the most promising young American violinists by winning one of the top prizes in the 1988 Naumburg International Violin Competition. Following his New York debut at Alice Tully Hall, Bernard Holland wrote in the New York Times “his open-throttle intensity in the Beethoven Concerto has an irresistible exuberance. He has a good technique and single-minded devotion to his material. He is an attractive musical personality.”

Born into a highly gifted family, his father, Arthur, was a founding member of The Juilliard String Quartet and Music Director of the Hartford Symphony, and his mother played and taught piano. Mr. Winograd started studying the violin at the age of four and soon teamed up with his parents to perform chamber music. His early exposure to chamber music allowed him to learn a majority of its repertoire and he remains fervently devoted to performing it whenever he can.

Mr. Winograd gave his first solo public performance at the age of 11, and at the age of 17, he was accepted as a scholarship student of Dorothy DeLay at The Juilliard School of Music. He was first-prize winner of the Paganini Competition at the Aspen Music Festival and also won the Bryan Young Artists Competition in North Carolina. He has performed with many orchestras in the Northeast, including the Hartford, Pueblo and North Carolina Symphonies, in addition to yearly appearances at the Aspen Music Festival.

During the summer of 1987, Mr. Winograd toured throughout the Far East as featured soloist with the Toscanini Orchestra in Parma, Italy. As a recitalist, Mr. Winograd has performed throughout the United States and Europe. Highlights included appearances in Brussels, Helsinki and the Great Hall at the Moscow Conservatory. Mr. Winograd’s recital repertoire covers many different periods and styles.
